A People's Cantata of the Chilean Nitrate Miners. Feat. Hector Duvachelle
In 1907, Chilean workers in nitrate mines that were owned largely by foreign companies went on strike with demands for humane working conditions and higher wages. Eighteen thousand miners marched with their families to the port of Santa Maria de Iquique seeking support. They were met at their encampment with a slew of bullets fired by the army, which ultimately killed two thousand people. Chile: The Siege of Santa Maria de Iquique: A People's Cantata of the Chilean Nitrate Miners, composed by Luis Advis, weaves together verbal narration by Hector Duvauchelle with song and musical interludes by the folk group Quilapayún to recount the story of the 1907 massacre.

Paredon Records, gegründet 1969 durch Barbara Dane und Irwin Silber, wurde Bestandteil des antiimperialistischen Aufbruch. Das Label veröffentlichte die Musik aus Klassenkämpfen, von Befreiungsbewegungen; von revolutionären KünstlerInnen. Damit schuf Paredon eine Plattform (und ein Archiv) künstlerischen Ausdruck aus dem weltweiten Klassenkampf sichtbar zu machen. Revolutionäre Musik aus Cuba, Angola, Puerto Rico, Vietnam, Türkei, USA, und vielen weiteren Ländern sind hier veröffentlicht. Das Paredon Archive liegt bei Smithsonian Folkways Recordings in den USA.
